We had Terry, Don, Breann, Kol come to our residence to remove a very large 100 year old Elm tree that was diseased. They did an amazing job leaving no mess. They had to remove my temporary fence for access and re-built it that same day without any issues. Very Professional, would highly recommend.
This morning they were out front hard at work removing a large, dead tree. I spoke with a member of the crew, Cam, he was friendly, courteous, and answered all my questions. It's a rare sight nowadays to see a crew of yellow vests and everyone working.
Had the team come out and take care of pruning my giant Ash trees. Great service! They got it all done even though the tree needed a lot of work. Thanks again!
Tree pruning is all about keeping your trees healthy, strong, and looking their best. It involves removing dead, diseased, or damaged branches to prevent decay and improve the overall tree structure. Pruning also helps thin out overcrowded branches, allowing more sunlight and air to reach the tree, which promotes healthier growth.
Tree pruning isn’t just about keeping your trees looking good—it’s about keeping them safe, healthy, and thriving for years to come. Here are the three biggest reasons why regular pruning is essential:
To Get Healthier, Stronger Trees:
Pruning helps fight disease and insect infestations by removing affected branches before they spread. It also boosts air circulation, allows more sunlight through, and helps trees absorb nutrients more effectively, promoting overall health.
Safety Reasons:
Dead or damaged branches can be a hazard, especially during storms. Pruning removes weak limbs and prevents trees from growing too close to homes, utility lines, or walkways, reducing the risk of accidents.
Aesthetic Appeal:
A well-pruned tree looks more balanced, structured, and vibrant. Whether you’re shaping your tree’s form, encouraging new growth, or enhancing its natural beauty, pruning keeps your landscape looking its best.
Regular pruning doesn’t just benefit your trees—it makes your entire outdoor space safer, healthier, and more beautiful.
Pruning isn’t just about cutting branches—it’s about strategic care. At Green Drop, we tailor our pruning approach based on what your trees need most.
Here are some primary pruning techniques our arborists use:
Thinning – Boosts airflow & Sunlight
By selectively removing branches, we improve air circulation and allow more sunlight to reach the inner canopy. This reduces the risk of disease, encourages strong growth, and prevents overcrowding.
Raising – Creates Safe Clearance
We remove lower branches to ensure safe clearance for walkways, driveways, buildings, and vehicles. This is ideal for trees near sidewalks, streets, or structures.
Reduction – Manages Size & Shape
If a tree is growing too large or extending into utility lines, rooftops, or other structures, we carefully reduce its height or spread to prevent damage and improve structural integrity.
Topping – A Last Resort
Topping involves cutting back large branches or a significant portion of the tree’s canopy. While sometimes necessary, it can stress trees and lead to weak regrowth, so we only recommend it in rare cases.
Other Specialised Techniques
Some trees may require additional methods like structural pruning for young trees, deadwood removal for safety, or restorative pruning for damaged trees. Every tree is different, which is why a free tree assessment helps us determine the best approach for your landscape.
Not sure if your trees need pruning? Here are some key indicators that it’s time to call in the pros:
Dead, Diseased, or Damaged Branches
If you notice dry, brittle, or broken branches, they need to go. Dead limbs can fall unexpectedly, posing a safety risk, while diseased branches can spread infections to the rest of the tree.
Overgrown or Crowded Branches
A tree with dense, tangled, or crossing branches may be struggling for light and air circulation. Thinning out the canopy allows sunlight to reach inner branches and promotes healthier growth.
Branches Too Close to Structures
If limbs are touching or leaning toward your home, garage, power lines, or walkways, they could cause damage in storms or high winds. Pruning helps keep trees at a safe distance.
Weak or Low-Hanging Branches
Branches that dip too low over driveways, sidewalks, or outdoor spaces can be a hazard for vehicles, pedestrians, and even your lawn. Raising the canopy creates safe clearance underneath.
Sparse or Uneven Growth
If one side of your tree looks full while the other is sparse, or if you see excessive leaf drop, it might be struggling. Strategic pruning can restore balance and improve tree structure.
Storm Damage or Cracked Limbs
After a heavy storm, check your trees for splits, cracks, or hanging limbs. These weakened branches are a fall risk and should be removed before they cause damage.
Lack of New Growth
If your tree isn’t budding or producing leaves like it used to, it might need a little help. Pruning away deadwood encourages new, healthy growth.
